CHISHOLM
Chisholm is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 4,960 at the 2000 census. Chisholm was founded by Archibald Mark Chisholm, known as Iron Man.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.3 km˛ (4.7 mi˛). 11.4 km˛ (4.4 mi˛) of it is land and 0.9 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it (7.17%) is water.
Chisholm is in the center of the Mesabi Iron Range, one of the four iron ranges in the Arrowhead Region of Minnesota.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 4,960 people, 2,178 households, and 1,287 families residing in the city. The population density was 436.2/km˛ (1,128.6/mi˛). There were 2,375 housing units at an average density of 208.9/km˛ (540.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city was 97.92% White, 0.10% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.
There were 2,178 households out of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.4% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% were non-families. 37.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size as 2.88.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $28,472, and the median income for a family was $40,431. Males had a median income of $35,972 versus $21,406 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,204. About 5.7% of families and 12.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.1% of those under age 18 and 11.0% of those age 65 or over.
Education
The Chisholm Independent School District draws students from the city of Chisholm and surrounding Balkan Township. The Vaughan-Steffensrud Elementary School (named for the first two superintendents of the Chisholm school system) has classes for children from preschool through third grade. Chisholm Middle school has students in grades 4 through 8, and Chisholm High School has grades 9 through 12.
Chisholm high school sports teams (nickname: "Bluestreaks") participate in Class "A" of the Minnesota State High School League. Competitive varsity sports include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country running, football, softball, swimming and diving, track and field, and volleyball. Chisholm students join with students in nearby Hibbing to participate in alpine skiing, golf, gymnastics, hockey (boys), hockey (girls), and tennis.
DULUTH
Duluth is the county seat of St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 86,918. Taking account of the growth of the city and its boundaries, there are around an extra 92,000 people on the outer boundaries, making the population (including outer suburbs and villages) 184,000. It is a seaport at the westernmost point on the north shore of Lake Superior. It is linked to the Atlantic Ocean 2,300 miles (3,700km) away via the Great Lakes and then either the Erie Canal/New York State Barge Canal or the Saint Lawrence Seaway; it is farther from the ocean than any other deep water port.
Duluth forms a single metropolitan area with Superior, Wisconsin, together called the Twin Ports. The two cities share a harbor and are one of the most important ports on the Great Lakes. Among the items shipped out are iron ore (taconite) and grain. Both cities have museums devoted to the local nautical heritage, and Duluth has America's only all freshwater aquarium, the Great Lakes Aquarium. A major destination for tourists is the Aerial Lift Bridge spanning the short canal into Duluth's harbor.
The city is named for Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, the first known European explorer of the area.
ELY
Ely is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,724 at the 2000 census. The city is best known by outsiders as the most popular entry point for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,724 people, 1,912 households residing in 2.72 square mils, and 916 families residing in the city. The population density was 528.6/km˛ (1,369.5/mi˛). There were 1,912 housing units at an average density of 271.4/km˛ (703.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city was 96.86% White, 0.86% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.30% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.67% of the population.
There were 1,912 households out of which 21.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.6% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.9% were non-families. 39.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.72.
In the city the population was spread out with 17.8% under the age of 18, 16.2% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,615, and the median income for a family was $36,047. Males had a median income of $34,559 versus $18,833 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,855. About 9.5% of families and 14.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.9% of those under age 18 and 12.5% of those age 65 or over.
